That brake pedal you press every time you need to stop at a stop sign or stop light is very important. That brake pedal sets off a reaction with the brakes on your wheels so you stop in time. If your brakes are bad, you aren't going to be able to stop and could end up in an accident, or you could end up causing an accident that injures others. If your brakes are going bad, there are going to be signs that you need to watch out for. Read on for signs that your brakes need to be inspected.

1. Sounds

Listen for sounds that your car is exhibiting such as squealing sounds, grinding noises, or other sounds when you are braking, or pressing the brake while turning. If you're noticing these sounds, it could be because of your brakes. If your brakes are going bad, these sounds are usually what you'll hear first. The squealing sound is usually the first sound, then grinding noises indicate your brakes are so bad that your rotors are beginning to go bad as well. Listen to your car and listen for sounds that could indicate a problem.

2. Feel

If you are beginning to feel your vehicle stutter when attempting to stop, or you notice that your car is jerky when you try to stop, it could be because your brakes are going bad. Your car should stop without any feeling of hesitation or any type of stuttering. If you spot this problem, you need to have your brakes inspected to be sure they aren't going bad, or you don't have some other type of issue with your brakes.

3. Smells

If you are smelling a burning smell when you attempt to brake, it may be an issue with your brakes. Your brakes may be giving off this odor because the brake pads have gotten so worn down the grinding in the rotors is starting to cause a burning odor. If you smell the burning odor, have your brakes inspected to be sure they are in good shape. If they need to be changed, have your brakes changed by a professional auto service technician.

If you have noticed these signs in your vehicle, it could be that your brakes need to be replaced. Take your car to a local auto service shop for a brake inspection and replacement to ensure your brakes are working properly and your car is going to stop as it should.
