If you have an older vehicle, then you can expect certain parts to wear down over time. Some of these parts are located in the engine, like the piston rings. Keep reading to learn what the piston rings are and to understand some of the symptoms of piston ring failure.

What Is A Piston Ring?

A piston ring is actually not a single ring, but a series of them that sit on each of the pistons inside your engine. These pistons are located in the engine block and compress air and fuel so that combustion can take place. The rings on these pistons have a few different functions; one of the most important is to seal the piston so compression gasses cannot escape from the wall of the cylinder.

The rings also help to retain a film of lubrication between the piston and the cylinder wall so the piston can compress the air and fuel without much friction. They can absorb some of the heat from the piston as well, so the engine block does not become too hot, and they keep the pistons supported so they can move up and down in smooth motions.

The piston rings sit low on the piston cylinder, just above the wrist pin that connects the piston to the connecting rod. The rings are typically not seen since they sit on the piston, which is housed in the engine block.

What Are The Signs Of Failure?

There are a few different signs of piston ring failure that you can look out for. The most obvious sign is the presence of gray smoke coming out of your exhaust. This indicates that the gasoline and air mixture inside the engine is not correct. In this case, the failure of the piston ring has allowed excess air into the mix and this produces the telltale smoke.

You also may notice that your vehicle does not have the power it once did; specifically, it is not likely to accelerate as quickly or as easily. This indicates that the pistons are not moving the way that they should with good lubrication. Friction may be causing the pistons to stick and the engine is not receiving the combustion gasses as quickly.

A general lack of performance in the way the engine acts and sounds is also a possible sign of piston ring failure.
