If you know someone who loves working on their car, then you already know what type of Christmas gift they will love: tools! Now, if you are not a gearhead like they are, you are probably wondering what type of tool to get. It can be very confusing when looking at hammers, wrenches, pliers, and lots of others things when you don't use them yourself, but don't stress out. Here is a list of some great automotive tools you can get your loved one as a gift.

A Brand New Socket Set

Everyone who works on cars will need a socket wrench and a assortment of socket attachments. The reason a new socket set is always a good gift is that people misplace socket attachments over time. Unless the person is super diligent about putting everything away when they are done working on their car, they are bound to have a socket set with missing pieces. This can be a nightmare when working on an engine because you don't want to get the engine block open and find you are missing the right attachment for your socket wrench. So, a new socket set is always going to be appreciated.

Magnetic Tipped Screwdrivers

Another very cool gift is a set of automotive screwdrivers that have magnetic tips. These are fantastic when working in tight spaces because they prevent screws from slipping and dropping. Often, when you are working in a very tight space, such as in an engine compartment or under a door panel, you can't have two hands working on removing a screw. With a regular screwdriver, that screw can easily fall off when it turns out. Normally, you can use your other hand to stabilize it, but when you only have one hand that can fit in that space, you can't. The magnetic screwdriver will prevent that screw from dropping free once it has turned loose. It will keep the screw magnetically attached to the screwdriver.

Jackstands and Tire Ramps

One of the most important things to have in a garage when working with cars are jackstands and tire ramps. These are necessary to safely work under the car. The ramps can be used to elevate the car during an oil change. Your friend can place the ramps at the front of the car, drive up on them, and then slide under and change the oil. They can also use jack stands to secure the car when working on the exhaust or other undercarriage. The jack stands are a much safer way to raise the car up as opposed to simply relying on a pump jack. With jack stands, the car is lifted up with a pump (or scissor) jack and the stands are placed around the car to help secure it and lessen the likelihood that it will fall.
